NAYA RAIPUR

BRT, NMT and ITS

The state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh on November 1st, 2000 in deference to its distinctive historical, social background and natural resources. The city of Raipur, capital of the state has an estimated population of 21 million. Raipur has been administratively divided into 13 Tehsils and 15 revenue blocks.

Considering the immense growth potential of the city and with a view to decongest the city, a need was felt for creation of a new development area in close proximity to the city. The new development area has been named as “Naya Raipur”. Naya Raipur is being developed in close proximity to the existing airport of Raipur and spreads over an area of approximately 106.6 square kilometers, including the green belt.

Naya Raipur is proposed to be developed in a planned manner with a focus on socio-economic and cultural life and is envisaged as being lively and vibrant city equipped with state of art physical, social and economic infrastructure. Naya Raipur Development Authority (NRDA), established under the Madhya Pradesh Nagar Tatha Gram Nivesh Adhiniyam, 1973 has been appointed as the nodal agency for development and administration of Naya Raipur.

Recognizing the importance of integrating urban transport planning with infrastructure investment in the initial stages of city development, the New Raipur Development Authority (NRDA) has proposed a BRT system (BRTS) as well as bikeways for all major arterial routes of the city spanning over the year 2031. GEF supports the physical investments for the initial BRT corridors and for bikeways in Naya Raipur, and provides technical assistance of a Transit Oriented Development study.

The following project components constitute the GEF-SUTP project for Naya Raipur:

The following corridors have been identified for introduction of BRT system in the Naya Raipur city.

Bus Route Corridor Length Locations in Raipur Linking roads locations in Naya Raipur
a1 18.0 Teli bandh chowk NH6- Expressway Capital complex
a2 22.0 Santoshi chowk NH43- Khandwa Capital complex
a3 24.0 Government Housing Colony - Telibandh chowk NH 6 Capital complex
a4 17.0 N.A N.A Nawagaon chowk- Capital complex- University Complex(NH43 Junction)
a5 (Multiple) 8.0 N.A N.A Different sections of Naya Raipur

The identified network corridor would hence traverse through the existing road network in Raipur, NH 6, NH 43 and select road networks within Naya Raipur. The diagrammatic representation of the network corridor is set out in the figure below.

Cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways: With multiple objectives of equitable opportunity for all modes of traffic, reduce non-renewable energy consumption and vehicle emissions and promote a sustainable urban transportation system, it is proposed to provide comfortable and safe facilities for pedestrians and cyclists along with the implementation of BRT system along the BRT corridors.
