Intelligent Transport System
Mysore is the cultural capital of Karnataka, Traditionally, Mysore has been home to industries such as weaving, sandalwood carving, bronze work and production of lime and salt. Since 2003, information technology companies have been creating bases in Mysore.
Mysore City road traffic is heterogeneous in character. Significant modal shift is needed to deliver national and international sustainable development aims for a strong economy, an inclusive society and a clean environment. KSRTC aims to bring about this modal shift in the city of Mysore by improving the perceived image of KSRTC services. The current project aims to improve the reliability of KSRTC city services through effective Travel Demand Management measures and Emergency Management System and reduction in the waiting time of its passengers.
GEF-SUTP demonstration project supports the CDP in promoting a sustainable urban transport in Mysore. Subprojects include an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to improve bus operations.
Intelligent Transport System (ITS) - ITS subproject is designed to improve operational and managerial efficiency in the bus transport system. Activities in this Sub-Component include:
- Establishing a centralized traffic control centre to handle the operational requirements of traffic management;
- Introducing GPS services in city bus fleet (500 buses) to monitor the bus movement;
- Introducing LED display boards at all the bus-stops (80 stops) of the city to provide real time information about bus operations;
- Introducing public information system (announcement system) inside 500 buses; 5) installing plasma display screens for checking the arrival and departure of buses at two main bus stations;
- Introducing commuting buses and smart cards to reduce the ticket transaction time;
- Introducing information services to travelling passengers through SMS, PDA devices.
Project Management Consultants - KSRTC plans to outsource the supervision of ITS installation and charge the costs (estimated at 9.4 million Rupees) to the project.
Implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems is a pioneering effort by KSRTC to contribute to the first step in providing dynamic information of bus routes. On completion of this project, it is bound to encourage use of public transport by reducing the use of personal vehicles significantly, contribute to saving the environment from heavy vehicle pollution and ease congestion on city roads.
The Intelligent Transport System Project to be implemented at Mysore addresses the critical issue of road congestion by offering state-of-art technologies and attractive, convenient, comfortable, value added services to encourage the usage of bus services against individual personal vehicles.
